Monday, 19 March 1804 (Western Flying Post) Thomas Smith guilty of the murder of Ann, wife of William Clarke, by tying a cord round her neck and strangling her, in Briants Piddle on 16th August 1803 . He was ordered to be executed on Monday, 19 March but committed suicide in gaol during the night before. His dead body was brought out of the gaol and suspended from the gallows for seven hours.
